01 · Chapter one, page one — how a coat gets written

Amara Quist, 34

Amara Quist has interpreted for ministers, surgeons and one furious chef for nine years. Her job is to say everything and be remembered for none of it. She arrives before the delegates, waits at the doors until the hall is full, then speaks for strangers in two languages at once. Nobody looks at the booth. She knows this, and dresses for the one moment they do: a bow at the throat that never needs retying, a coat cut to hold its line through a seven-hour session, and a colour bright enough to be found across a crowded room.

The cast

One outfit, six parts. Each was written into Amara’s story before a pattern was cut, and each has exactly one job.

  1. Amara crossing the blush plaster room in the long mustard double-breasted coat, worn open and swinging with her stride.
Cut to stand still in. It does most of the listening.
  2. Close crop of the peacock-teal silk blouse with cream and mustard magnolias and a pussy-bow tied at the throat, mustard coat lapels either side.
A bow at the throat that never needs retying. We tested it through a budget debate.
  3. Mustard high-waisted wide-leg trousers and belt mid-stride on a marble floor, teal heels just visible.
Wide enough to walk fast in. Sharp enough that nobody notices you did.
  4. A pair of peacock-teal suede pointed pumps with square buckles on a white marble plinth.
Low enough to stand in all day. Pointed enough to be taken seriously when she sits.
  5. The structured peacock-teal top-handle bag with a mustard flap on a marble plinth beside white hydrangeas.
Notes in one language go left. The other goes right. She has never once mixed them up.
  6. Teal enamel drop earrings, a teal-dial watch, an enamel cuff and a folded magnolia-print silk scarf on white marble.
The things only she sees: in the lift mirror, on the way up.

03 · The method

If it isn’t in the story, it isn’t in the coat.

Write the person.

Ines Marr starts every garment as six hundred words about someone who doesn’t exist: their job, their weather, what they carry, what they’re tired of. There are no sketches at this stage. There is barely a budget.

Cut what the story asks for.

Duncan Abebe-Ross reads the text with a pencil and underlines everything a garment could answer. A seven-hour session becomes a cloth that won’t crease. A crowded room becomes a colour. If a line can’t be answered in cloth, it stays a line.

Strike out the rest.

Anything not underlined goes: trims, logos, contrast piping, the second pocket nobody asked for. It’s why nothing we make has a badge on it, and why each piece is made once, in an edition of sixty.

Ines writes. Duncan cuts. Neither of them sketches.

The Interpreter’s Coat

(Enter AMARA, before the delegates. The hall is still empty.)

Double-faced wool, so there is no lining to twist and no seam to show when she turns. Long enough to read as one clean line from the back of a hall, light enough to wear through a seven-hour session. Shown as Look 01, over the Bow Blouse and the Delegate Trouser.
